you could probably dig along the foundation and trim the roots and have it pointed for a little more than your deductible would be if you waited for enough damage to take place...

Doubt it. Homeowners insurance is to repair damage, not perform maintenance. If a tree fell on your house, they would pay to repair the damages.

Your insurance may cover it. Only way to be certain is to call your agent and ask.
